BOPP/VMPET/LDPE

The film material of chilli sauce square bottoom sachet is made of triplex layers, with the outside BOPP film working as the print substrate film, VMPET film working as the middle supportive and barrier layer, and finally, the LDPE film working as the inner sealing layer. The thickness of the LDPE film should be adjusted to suit the requirements of 450g spicy chili sauce.

BOPP Film

BOPP film is short for biaxially orientated polypropylene film, one of the most common print substrates in flexible packaging.

BOPP film can be produced using either a tubular process or a tenter frame process. In the tenter frame process, a thick extruded sheet is heated to its softening point and then mechanically stretched by 300–400%. So BOPP films have many advantages, including

VMPET Film

And finally, realize a bright metallic film that is widely used in flexible packaging and standup pouch packages.

The aluminum layer on the VMPET film is very fragile and may be damaged under heat or moisture conditions, not to mention water boiling sterilization. To meet the requirements for the pasteurization of chili sauce products, the aluminum layer will have to be protected with certain craftsmanship of anchor coating and top varnish. LDPE Film

LDPE Film

LDPE film is short for low-density polyethylene film, the most commonly used inner sealing film for multi-layer flexible packaging in various applications.

LDPE, is a thermoplastic polymer that is a member of the polyethylene family of plastics. It is known for its flexibility, toughness, transparency, and corrosion resistance. 

LDPE is also lightweight, easy to fabricate, and has good chemical and impact resistance.

LDPE is nontoxic, non-contaminating, and has a high degree of break resistance. It’s also lightweight, corrosion resistant, and has good chemical and impact resistance. 

These 3 layers are bonded together into a finished laminated foil material under the dry lamination or solvent-free lamination process. Usually, we describe the finished laminate as BOPP/VMPET/LDPE foil.

Thickness

As you can see below picture, the overall thickness of this spout pouch is 0.120 mm, which equals 120 microns for this laminated foil.

So, how does this foil structure perform when it is intended for chilli sauce standup packaging? Will it break during the transit?

Great Standup Effect

With the supportive middle layer of VMPET film, this triplex foil laminate is stiff enough to create a good standup effect for the packages up to 500 ml. As you can learn from the video below, the square bottom sachet presents a great standing profile for 450 ml chilli sauce.

Please note, BOPP/LDPE foil structure should not be taken to convert standup spout packaging, as it may be too soft to present a good standing profile.

Mechanical Property

The spout package will protect the chilli sauce product during filling, transit, and distribution. Under the emergency circumstances of unexpected shock in delivery or packages falling off the goods shelf, the spout package will never be allowed to break. As the adhesion of the aluminum metalized layer to the polyester film is low, the peel strength of this triplex foil BOPP18/VMPET12/LDPE is not so strong as the plastic laminates, such as PET/PA/LDPE or PA/LDPE. So, BOPP18/VMPET12/LDPE foil may be not strong enough for packages with a volume higher than 500ml, especially for liquid products.

At present, we are outputting the standup spout pouch with a maximum volume of 10 liters. The below video shows the drop test process of this package with 10 liters of liquids filled. Barrier Performance

Usually, the barrier performance of a multi-material laminate is evaluated by WVTR (short for water vapor transmission rate) and OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate). The below table shows the typical values of the WVTR and OTR of the most common substrate films in flexible packaging.

A sachet of great light-shielding properties would be preferred when the formula of the chili sauce contains volatile ingredients. Some tomato ketchup may be mixed with the chili sauce, which increase the requirements of barrier performance of this foil material. Based on our experience, BOPP/VMPET/LDPE foil laminate will be able to meet most of the requirements for chili sauce packages.
